Toronto’s Portuguese Community celebrated the 60th anniversary of the Feast of Santo Cristo on May 10 at St. Mary’s Portuguese Church on Bathurst Street.

The devotion to Senhor Santo Cristo dos Milagres — the Holy Christ of the Miracles — is one of the most beloved religious celebrations in Portugal, especially in the Azores. Centered in the city of Ponta Delgada on the island of São Miguel, this feast has inspired generations of Portuguese families with deep faith in the suffering, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The image of Ecce Homo — “Behold the Man” — reminds the faithful of Christ crowned with thorns, humiliated and suffering for humanity. Yet this suffering is not meaningless; it becomes the path to salvation and eternal life.

Through Portuguese immigration, especially from the Azores, this devotion came to Canada and became an important spiritual and cultural treasure for Portuguese communities. The 60th anniversary celebration shows how this tradition continues to unite families in faith, prayer, and cultural identity across generations.

The Holy Mass and procession presided over by His Eminence Frank Cardinal Leo carried a powerful spiritual message. In his homily, Cardinal Leo emphasized that devotion to Santo Cristo helps believers discover meaning in suffering. Human pain, trials, and sacrifices can be united with Christ’s own suffering on the Cross. This devotion also strengthens Christian hope: suffering does not have the final word. Through the resurrection of Jesus, believers are promised new life and eternal communion with God. Thus, the feast becomes not only a cultural celebration, but a profound proclamation of hope, faith, and the victory of life over death.
