Dear parishioners,
In our reflection on the Mass, we come to appreciate the profound significance of the Preface, a pivotal part of the Eucharistic Prayer. This sacred introduction serves as a heartfelt invitation from the priest, who, acting in the person of Christ, calls the congregation to join in a collective act of thanksgiving to God. The dialogue that unfolds is not merely a ritual exchange; it is a moment that unites our hearts in worship. When the priest proclaims, "The Lord be with you," and we respond, "And with your spirit," we affirm our shared connection in faith and grace.
As the priest invites us to "Lift up your hearts," we respond with "We lift them up to the Lord," a powerful acknowledgment of our intent to offer our very selves to God. This opening sets the stage for a beautiful expression of gratitude as we are called to "give thanks to the Lord our God," responding with a heartfelt, "It is right and just." These words resonate deeply, reminding us that gratitude is not just an act; it is a way of being that aligns our spirits with the divine.
The Preface is rich with themes of thanksgiving for God's magnificent works—creation, redemption, and sanctification. It draws our attention to God’s constant presence and favor in our lives and within the Church. As we journey through the Preface, we find ourselves woven into a tapestry of praise, culminating in the acclamation of "Holy, Holy, Holy." This powerful proclamation connects us with the angels and saints in heaven, creating a harmonious chorus of worship that transcends time and space.
Blessings,
Fr. Andrew
